Bengkung Belly Binding
Bengkung or Malaysian belly binding, considered to be an ancient art, is a tradition used in many cultures all over the world and is quickly becoming more popular in the US. It is the process of tightly wrapping fabric to support the pelvis, abdominal area and hips of a person in the postpartum period. People for generations have used belly binding to accomplish this.
Some buy a girdle-type garment of stretchy but supportive material, however many report that those can dig in to hip and rib bones and eventually lose elasticity. Indonesian's use long pieces of beautiful cloth, the advantage to using the cloth for wrapping is that it's infinitely adjustable, soft and comfortable, customizable to your changing shape, beautiful, and fits most sizes. The most powerful benefits that Bengkung belly binding provide are:
- Excellent for helping repair abdominal separation
- Gives support to the womb after birth
- Speeds up the healing process of the uterus and provides a cleansing of blood clots
- Helps to reduce common back and shoulder pain associated with nursing by improving posture
- Helps to tone up your abdominal muscles and shape your hips after childbirth, even with a cesarean
- Relieves muscular and tendon tension throughout the torso
- Relieves water retention
- Improves circulation
- Excellent support after surgical births (allow time for incision to heal prior to beginning bind)
Our pure muslin binds are about 18 yards long and 8-9 inches wide to accommodate low hip binds to support the pelvic floor and to accommodate every shape. These hand sewn and beautifully dyed binds are comfortable and supportive; and can be worn under or over clothing. We offer differing knot styles to fit the specific needs of each client we serve and add new color to our selection often. Knot styles differ based on shape and comfort. We prefer wrapping in the evening before bed so that you can sleep while it does most of the work, but you can be wrapped at any time of day and it will be beneficial. Binds are most beneficial when worn 12-24 hrs at a time and should be started 3-4 days after birth, after a c -section you should wait 2-4 weeks before beginning a bind to allow your incision to begin to heal properly.
At your binding session we will spend time with you to check your abdominal muscles for diastasis recti if wanted, and wrap your core in muslin cloth that will support you through your postpartum healing (and beyond, some keep their binds for future babies!) We provide instruction on how to self-wrap, or teach your partner how. We will also custom dye your belly bind if you have a specific color request.
